Subject Resources
There are a lot of subjects taught at Cuesta College, and many ways to find online information. Below are some of the best ways to get good quality information about subject areas. A good rule of thumb is that if a URL ends in ".edu" the site comes from a college, or university. This usually means that the information on that site is of a good quality. An address ending in ".org" can be good as well, as long as you know who maintains the site.
- Librarian's Internet Index
- This is a large database of researched subjects kept up to date by librarians. You can search by word, or go into the Directory to find good information on your subject.
- Google Directory
- This can also be found at the Google Main Page by clicking on the Directory tab near the top of the page.
- Search Engines
- Go to any good search engine (Google, Altavista, Yahoo). Put in the subject you are looking for with the word ëdirectoryí after it . For example, to find various Astronomy sites, put in the search terms 'Astronomy directories' to get a list of big sites on the subject.
- Infomine
- INFOMINE is a virtual library of Internet resources relevant to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It contains useful Internet resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers, and many other types of information. INFOMINE is librarian built.
- BUBL LINK
- BUBL LINK is the name of a catalogue of selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas and catalogued according to DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification). All items are selected, evaluated, catalogued and described. Links are checked and fixed each month.
BUBL 5:15 provides an alternative interface to this catalogue, based on subject terms rather than DDC. The aim is to guarantee at least 5 relevant resources for every subject included, and a maximum of 15 resources for most subjects, hence the name 5:15. Big subject areas are broken down into smaller categories. This is a British site, with many European contributors.
- Internet Subject Directories
- These directories are maintained at the University of Albany Libraries. It is divided into academic and professional directories, and commercial directories.
- Internet Public Library
- The Internet Public Library is a public service organization and a learning/teaching environment founded at the University of Michigan School of Information and hosted by Drexel University's College of Information Science & Technology.
